Built
in the late eighteenth century near where Andrew Lewis gathered
his forces for the Battle of Point Pleasant, the Barracks is one
of the earliest remaining structures in Lewisburg.
The
Barracks has served many purposes during the past 200 years -
from an early military garrison, to a private home, to a library
and museum.

"At
5 o'clock on the morning of May 23, 1862, Lewisburg, normally
a peaceful town of 800 inhabitants, awoke to the roar of artillery
and the rattle of musketry. On that morning, at this unlikely
spot, Union and Confederate soldiers met in a brief but deadly
battle that is little remembered today."
Visit
the sites of this Battle, such as the John Wesley Methodist Church,
the Old Stone Presbyterian Church, and the Greenbrier County Library.
You can view the soldiers' names scratched on the wall of the
Library.

Beartown
State Park is a natural area of 107 acres located on the eastern
summit of Droop Mountain, seven miles southwest of Hillsboro,
West Virginia. Beartown is noted for its unusual rock formations,
which are comprised of Droop, or Pottsville, Sandstone formed
during the Pennsylvanian age.
At
Beartown State Park, one may see that the forces of nature are
constantly at work, slowly breaking down even the largest rocks.
Forget, for awhile, the hectic pace of modern life.

Visit
Greenbrier County's Historic Cemeteries, such as the Lewisburg Cemetery,
where you can visit the grave of Dick Pointer, a black slave who
distinguished himself at the Battle of Fort Donnally in 1778. Visit
the Confederate Cemetery, where the remains of 95 unknown Confederate
soldiers lie in a cross-shaped common grave. Among them are most
of those killed in the Battle of Lewisburg on May 23, 1862. On a
grassy knoll four-tenths of a mile west of the Confederate Monument,
15 Union soldiers were buried after this same Battle. After the
war, the Union dead were moved to the National Cemetery in Staunton
Virginia, where they rest today. |
